At Exa Agents, we’re building the agentic operating layer for the Global South.
We design AI systems that work the way emerging markets do, grounded in real-world context, tuned to local languages and workflows, and built to drive impact where it matters most. Our agents are being deployed at enterprises in East Africa, currently handling sales and operations. This is just the starting point. As we expand across industries and communities, our mission is to make intelligent systems not just available, but native to the Global South.
Most AI tools are built for the Global North, assuming fast internet, cloud-based teams, and SaaS native workflows. They break in contexts where infrastructure is patchy, interfaces are informal, and multiple languages shape day-to-day operations.
Even where businesses are eager to adopt AI, systems are misaligned. Models are trained on foreign data, tools don’t integrate with regional platforms, and transformation costs are high. Without intervention, the Global South risks missing out — again — on the next wave of technological progress.
Opportunity
Emerging economies are set to leap. By 2030, Africa will hold over 40% of global renewable energy capacity. Already supplying 70% of global cobalt and significant lithium and rare earth minerals, it anchors critical global tech supply chains. Smartphone adoption is expected to reach 88% by 2030.
Over half the world lives in regions with informal workflows, uneven infrastructure, and abundant yet under-utilised talent, creating ideal conditions for intelligence systems built explicitly for these realities. After enterprise adoption, we move to AI-native devices — that are solar-powered, offline-first, and sensor-integrated - reaching rural clinics, smallholder farms, and local schools. These devices become the greatest source of data on the most underrepresented half of the world. The opportunity lies in intentionally designing intelligent systems with and for these emerging regions.
